- We came into indications of marmots
somewhat lower down that I had expected
but in the type of country that I
had expected. Country quite similar to
that in which I took Okanagan in
Kokanee Park near Nelson. We only
saw two animals and heard two
more. They have a lour chirrup
somewhat reminiscent of the Columbian
Ground Squirrel as well as the character-
istic alarm whistle. I shot two.
One got down its hole. One we have.
An immature animal, fur black except
for a spot of white on the forhead and
a strip down the belly.
Also noted a myriad of chickadee
and juncoes and saw a merlin
persuing a blue grouse and saw
two black swifts over the summit.
Near Camp we heard a flight of
geese go over in the fog.
Aug [August] 31. [1943]
Away early to climb Albert Edward and
try and get some Ptarmigan. Excepting
for a single hawk (sharpshin) seen
at about 4500 feet we saw practically
no birds until we were really high
up ont he mountain. After passing
the half-dome, on the long ridge that
runs North + SOuth I took the lead
