Struck fresh tracks beyond
place where found dead wolf.
They had come on on [illegible word crossed out]
snowshoe tracks but only
for a very short distance. Trail
led straight up very steep
hillside. About 3/4 of way
up came on fresh calf
elk kill not over two days old. Absolutely fresh
wolf tracks all around.
Kill not yet frozen. Nothing
left by [word crossed out] but leg bones, pelvis,
jaw bones, and cape of
skin Calf had been first
hit higher up, much
blood and guts, then dragged
down hill. Here were two
sets of beds on knoles [knolls]
as described previously.
They indicated 4-5 wolves.
These wolves appear to hunt
along ridges and up draws
of this very steep terrain
and catch elk in very [illegible word]
places in deep snow. Cutting
back toward road we crossed
a major ridge tracked down
[different handwriting; possibly Jim Hatter]
