- Lamprey - Lampetra planeri [underlined] [European brook lamprey]
May 30/42 [1942] Lampreys were again present in Smith
Falls Creek below overflow pipe beside
the road, Cultus Lake. Fred Martin,
in charge of Hatchery, says they appeared
on April 1st this season.
Cowan [McTaggart Cowan] collected a few, including
females filled with eggs, and sexually
mature males
Later the two of us netted specimens
by holding net below while turning over
rocks. The Lampreys apparently were
hiding beneath stones and when disturbed
they drifted downstream into the net
Several "knots" of lampreys were seen
where they were apparently spawning. Close
inspection showed eggs in the gravel.
Two species of Cottids - Cottus asper (?) [prickly sculpin]
and C. aleuticus (?) [Coastrange sculpin] + coho fry were also
taken at the same points.
