Tells the story of Samuel Pickwick, a good natured elderly gentleman, president of the Pickwick Club. With three other members of the club, Pickwick travels around the English countryside, where he becomes caught up in a series of comic adventures, and romantic and legal misunderstandings. Although light in tone, the novel foreshadows the social concerns that would emerge in Dickens' later work. Issued monthly from April 1836 to November 1837. Chapters 40-42: Chapter 40: What befell Mr. Pickwick when he got into the Fleet; what debtors he saw there; and how he passed the night Chapter 41: Illustrative, like the preceding one, of the old proverb, that adversity brings a man acquainted with strange bed-fellows. Likewise containing Mr. Pickwick's extraordinary and startling announcement to Mr. Samuel Weller Chapter 42: Showing how Mr. Samuel Weller got into difficulties
