Posthumous papers of the Pickwick Club, no. 17
Tells the story of Samuel Pickwick, a good natured elderly gentleman, president of the Pickwick Club. With three other members of the club, Pickwick travels around the English countryside, where he becomes caught up in a series of comic adventures, and romantic and legal misunderstandings. Although light in tone, the novel foreshadows the social concerns that would emerge in Dickens' later work. Issued monthly from April 1836 to November 1837. Chapters 46-48: Chapter 46: Is chiefly devoted to matters of business, and the temporal advantage of Dodson and Fogg -- Mr. Winkle re-appears under extraordinary circumstances; and Mr. Pickwick's benevolence proves stronger than his obstinacy Chapter 47: Relates how Mr. Pickwick, with the assistance of Samuel Weller, essayed to soften the heart of Mr. Benjamin Allen, and to mollify the wrath of Mr. Robert Sawyer Chapter 48: Containing the story of the bagman's uncle
