The main theme of the novel according to Dickens's preface is selfishness, portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. Dickens introduced the first private detective character in this novel. The original parts issued from January 1843 to July 1844. Chapters 11-12: Chapter 11. Wherein a certain gentleman becomes particular in his attentions to a certain lady; and more coming events than one, cast their shadows before -- Chapter 12. Will be seen in the long run, if not in the short one, to concern Mr. Pinch and others, nearly. Mr. Pecksniff asserts the dignity of outraged virtue; and young Martin Chuzzlewit forms a desperate resolution
