The main theme of the novel according to Dickens's preface is selfishness, portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. Dickens introduced the first private detective character in this novel. The original parts issued from January 1843 to July 1844. Chapters 16-17: Chapter 16. Martin disembarks from that noble and fast-sailing line of packet ship, "The Screw," at the Port of New York, in the United States of America. He makes some acquaintances, and dines at a boarding-house. The particulars of those transactions -- Chapter 17. Martin enlarges his circle of acquaintance; increases his stock of wisdom; and has an excellent opportunity of comparing his own experiences with those of Lummy Ned of the Light Salisbury, as related by his friend Mr. William Simmons
