Green, Eric Peter: my Army Medical Corps recollections (March 7, 2012)
An interview/narrative of Colonel Peter Green's experiences whilst serving with the Army Medical Corps in Africa. Interview took place on March 7, 2012.
Interviewee: Green, Eric Peter, b. 1944
ABSTRACT: This interview began Colonel Green’s background, including his training as a medical student and his time spent in the Royal Army Military Corps. Colonel Green then spoke about the CMTTU mission, its goals, participants and how successful he felt it was. The interview then moved to discuss daily life in Uganda, including the climate, accommodations and nutrition (which was especially pertinent, because Colonel Green made pies that were note-worthy in his discharge report from Uganda). Colonel Green then spoke about the medical issues facing troops in Uganda (including Ugandan troops), which included malaria, typhoid, cholera, improperly set fractures, broken bones, diarrhea, and the world’s third case of Owl Fly infestation of the rectum in a human. Colonel Green then moved on to tell me about some of the challenges associated with this mission being a Commonwealth mission (there weren’t many, boredom being the most prominent), the effects of the Cold War on the mission, and Field Ambulances. Follow this synopsis with a short time log of the interview, including time codes and a single sentence describing individual topics that were discussed. For example: 0:00-7:05 – Colonel Green’s background, training and arrival in Uganda. 7:05-8:39 – Description of the mission, goals, aims and countries who sent soldiers. 8:39-23:28 – Everyday life in Uganda, climate, food, housing. 23:28- 42:54 – Medical issues faced by troops in Uganda and medical care. 42:54- 56:00 – Challenges associated with this being a Commonwealth mission, the Cold War influence in Uganda, Field Ambulances.
