An interview/narrative of Claude McKenzie's experiences whilst serving in the Royal Canadian Navy. Interview took place on November 25, 2005.
ABSTRACT: Claude McKenzie Signed up with friend for Navy in 1961. Spent 13 years with Navy. Left due to stress and lack of opportunity for promotion due to bilingual requirements. Had been on HMCS Terra Nova when Ned Memnook passed away. Travelled to Alaska, Panama Canal, Argentina. Discusses benefits he believes everyone would get from serving at least three years with Military. Origins are from Root Portage, Ontario. 000 - How got involved with Military (March 1961) 016 - Journey over to Vietnam for Peacekeeping duties 024 - Duties 037 - Speaks of Ned Memnook who died on duty, returned all aboriginal crew members to Canada. 040 - Left for Medical reasons 058 - Worked for Corrections Canada 066 - 12 or 14 youth from hometown joined around 1960 072 - Talks of travels to Alaska, Panama Canal, Brazil, Argentina, Port Arthur, Ontario 086 - Help in Alaska with Earthquake 099 - Basic Training in Navy, got involved in sports 121 - Challenges encountered with bilingualism 130 - Eludes to discrimination on ship 153 - How to cope with racism 166 - Father joined army for WWI 175 - Father had fur trading store, only saw them twice a year 186 - Army Cadets in grade 7, 8, 9 216 - Benefits he thinks you can find in military service 230 - Memories of Ned Memnook 250 - Involvement with Aboriginal Vets Organizations 275 - Travelling to basic training 300 - Travelling Hong Kong 340 - Tape ends on side A
