The main theme of the novel according to Dickens's preface is selfishness, portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. Dickens introduced the first private detective character in this novel. The original parts issued from January 1843 to July 1844. Chapters 51-54: Chapter 51. Sheds new and brighter light upon the very dark place ; and contains the sequel of the enterprise of Mr. Jonas and his friend -- Chapter 52. In which the tables are turned, completely upside down -- Chapter 53. What John Westlock said to Tom Pinch's sister ; what Tom Pinch's sister said to John Westlock ; what Tom Pinch said to both of them ; and how they all passed the remainder of the day -- Chapter 54. Gives to author great concern. for it is the last in the book
