Lieff, Abraham: my wartime experiences (February 27, 2007)
Interviewer: Fitch, Edward and Sharon
ABSTRACT: Abraham Lieff In July 1937, in Ottawa, Abraham joined the Permanent Active Air Force as a Pilot Officer (Provisional). He was 22 at the time. He had graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen's University and was looking for interesting work. A friend who worked for the Ministry of Defense said they were looking for people. Abraham felt it was the right thing to do at that time. He did his preliminary training in Trenton. He served the war years as a logistics officer on bases right across Canada, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, looking after all equipment used by the Air Force. This continued after the war until Abraham retired as a Group Captain (Colonel) in 1968. In his 32 years in the Air Force Abraham and his family moved about 23 times. Abraham remembers only one incident of anti-Semitism, in Moncton. Otherwise he always felt accepted. He recommends a military career to our youth today. Abraham and his wife have lived in Victoria since 1991.
