Original meeting Hall of the Chinese Freemasons (Chee Kong Tong) on Fisgard Street
Interior view of the meeting hall with furnishings in the 1880's. In 1863 the first Hongmen society, named after Hong Shun Tang (Hung Sun Tong; 洪顺堂), was established in San Francisco. The Hongmen, renamed Chee Kung Tong (Chee Kong Ton; 致公堂), was founded in Victoria in 1876. It was the major Chinese association in Canada with political and welfare functions in many communities. Between 1885 and 1914 CKT grew to have over 40 branches across Canada, with Victoria as its headquarters until 1929. In 1920 CKT began to call itself the Chinese Freemasons. In 1915 the Dart Coon Club (達權社) was formed within the Chinese Freemasons of Victoria.
