- Tynron Aug [August] 14 Again spent most of the day at
the manse partly spent in sorting
my slides for a talk I gave this evening
in the parish hall to about 60 scouts
guides + people of the community. I was
surprised at the attendance + even though
I talked too long (as usual) they remained
most attentive. Garry [Cowan] has made friends
with a small scout Ronny Dugan
+ the two have put up a tent in
the manse grounds and are going to camp
out for a few days
Tynron Aug [August] 15. The noteable [notable] expedition today was
with Arthur Duncan to the Solway Firth
We drove via New Abbey were [where] we saw
the ruins of the wonderful old Abbey
known, as [word crossed out] I believe, as Sweetheart Abbey
On the mud flats of the Solway was the
finest collection of shorebirds I have seen
anywhere There were hundreds of oystercatchers
+ redshanks along with curlew, greenshanks,
turnstone, black-tailed godwit, bar tailed
godwit, common sandpiper, common,
herring + black headed gulls, 1 common tern.
To my delight I saw my first whinchat
+ stonechat. The latter is an exquisite
bird resembling a diminutive black
wren-tit except that it is not a
Marginalia: Shorebirds
