- The big event of our week was the Edinburgh
Tatoo [Tattoo] on Wednesday evening. We had tickets for
the late performance starting at 11 pM so we
set off from the house in time to get to our
seats in plenty of time. 3 batteries of seats had
been set up in the castle Esplanade. An eastern
tier faced the castle, while N [north] + S [south] tiers faced
each other across the esplanade square. Our
seats were high up on the S [south] side. We took
our places by the rather dim illumination
of some electric lights. The 20 thousand or
so people that the stands held came in a steady
stream round both ends of the East stand +
took their places. It was a chilly night with a
light wind from the direction of the castle.
Precisely at eleven a gun roared from
the castle wall, two great searchlights
shot across the sky into a great cross above
the castle, a spot light was focussed on
5 trumpeters, who high on the battlements
sounded a fanfare. As the echoes died
away the floodlights all over the castle
came on. The effect was breathtaking. The
great shadowy mass suddenly came to life
as something real + yet seemingly remote
An especially brilliant light picked out
the standard fluttering from the top
of the highest parapet.
All attention was on the castle as the
