- early 1600's were the main buildings, while
on top of an adjacent rock stood a small
red log fortress house built in 1400 +/-
to serve as protection from raiding Russians.
The furnishings of the main house were
most attractive, modernized in kitchen +
bathroom, + centrally heated the house made
the most of its antiquity + consequent beauty
without sacrificing comfort. The furniture
was all antique + in very good taste,
attractive + comfortable.
Here the game keeper has been raising
pheasants, partrige [partridge] + capercaille [capercaillie] for some 20
years + has developed a great skill at it.
The annual pheasant liberations are 1200 birds
of 5 weeks, mostly released by the gentle
method of dispersal from the brooder
coops. Both sexes are shot in big drive-
shoots as in Britain.
The capercaille [capercaillie] project particularly interested
me. Their adult birds all died last
winter from unidentified causes even
though they were submitted to veterinary
examination. This year 16 eggs were
picked up from 2 wild nests + all hatched.
One brood gave rise to 2 cocks + 7 hens. All
but one of the 2nd [second] brood died from disease,
contracted from the fostermother. The raising
routine is as follows.
