- The rock garden is good but not up
to Edinburgh.
I spent the morning at the museum +
the afternoon also until about 2 when
[Finn] Salomonsen + I went out to the zoo. Here
we were met by the Asst [Assistant] Director
Holger Poulsen, + his 4 year old daughter.
We spent 2 1/2 hours going round the zoo
I am most impressed with it, both in its
range of exhibits + its general standard
of maintenance. To me the most interesting
things were in the aviaries 4 beautifully
floored or planted cages [word crossed out] cases contained
hummingbirds - they are fed a special diet
(see Avicultural mag. [magazine] 1951 or 52) of sugar +
many other things + get drosophila daily for protein.
Some of their birds have been captive for 8 years.
The tropicals number 2 or 3 hundred species
+ are very fine but a unique exhibit is
the native waders. To keep their feet in
good condition the cage floor is covered
in moist pulverized peat. They are fed on
ground beef heart + bread. + it is exposed to them
in shallow dishes covered by wire screens.
These prevent the birds from soiling themselves.
A shall [shallow?] water pond is provided. Avocets, godwits
curlews, green + red shanks, jacanas, gallinules
rails, turnstones etc [etcetera] are all kept well.
The smaller shorebirds are fed a mix used for
