  • The rock garden is good but not up to Edinburgh. I spent the morning at the museum + the afternoon also until about 2 when [Finn] Salomonsen + I went out to the zoo. Here we were met by the Asst [Assistant] Director Holger Poulsen, + his 4 year old daughter. We spent 2 1/2 hours going round the zoo I am most impressed with it, both in its range of exhibits + its general standard of maintenance. To me the most interesting things were in the aviaries 4 beautifully floored or planted cages [word crossed out] cases contained hummingbirds - they are fed a special diet (see Avicultural mag. [magazine] 1951 or 52) of sugar + many other things + get drosophila daily for protein. Some of their birds have been captive for 8 years. The tropicals number 2 or 3 hundred species + are very fine but a unique exhibit is the native waders. To keep their feet in good condition the cage floor is covered in moist pulverized peat. They are fed on ground beef heart + bread. + it is exposed to them in shallow dishes covered by wire screens. These prevent the birds from soiling themselves. A shall [shallow?] water pond is provided. Avocets, godwits curlews, green + red shanks, jacanas, gallinules rails, turnstones etc [etcetera] are all kept well.
