  • main concourse. Repairs to the castle were made in the 18th century + at that time the interior was given painted design The old castle was another most interesting building. The big council or banquet hall is magnificent in its massive symmetry + so unlike the British castles in design + detail. It was the original seat of the Swedish monarchy. At old Uppsala - destroyed by fire in 1720 there are 3 large earth mounds + many smaller ones. One of them has been excavated + found to contain the boat burials of a series of viking noblemen. In a small museum I examined many relics in the form of armour, swords, etc [etcetera] taken from the excavation. The same building houses the original anatomical theatre where Olvus Rudebeck [Olaus Rudbeck] demonstrated human anatomy + made his discovery of the lymphatic system. The same Rudebeck [Olaus Rudbeck] was artist, sculptor, architect, botanist (laid out the original + the Royal botanical gardens here) + worked effectively in several other fields. On the street where Linne [Linnaeus] had his house several other famous Swedes lived including Celsius of Centigrade thermometer fame. I was shown through the very fine Zoological Institute that houses the 4 man department of zoology. It is a beautiful modern building with an excellent museum and
