- a poor cone crop forecast the harvest
should be heavier as most squirrels
will perish anyway.
It seems to me that we should be able
to forecast the possible future for peak grouse
pops. [populations] by learning the winter food in detail.
Lampio has found that when there
is a prolonged cold spell the squirrels
do not feed + it is then that the
heaviest losses take place.
The main disease is coccidiosis +
it spreads rapidly on the years of cone
failure. It is believed that the main
reason for this spread lies in changed
feeding habits. The squirrels turn to
ground feeding + use food contaminated with
their faeces full of coccidia
In years following a heavy spruce
cone yield there may be 4 litters per
year + the maxima are higher. Obversely
in poor years there may only be one
litter.
Caper [Capercaillie] + Grouse. [underlined]
The station has a group of 800 observers
that send in replies to questionairres [questionnaires]. These
men are interested + take careful observations
They are given Suomen Riista free + each year
about 15 of them get a week at Evo free
Marginalia: Grouse applic. [application]
