- entire room full of slides of brains of exper. [experimental]
octopi. Assistance is so cheap that it is most
economical to section + mount all of every brain
+ then pick them over later. About 30 techicians
undernourished, hang-dog youngsters do the work.
2 excellent staff artists are working full
time on illustration, charts, museum diagrams
etc [etcetera]. New animal quarters have been
constructed on the roof, + seem very good
though stocks are small. A good dissecting
room + a small operating room are
part of the quarters. Under a special Nuffield
grant an electronics engineer has been
developing a mechanical method of counting cells
on a microscope slide in an endeavour to
produce a machine that will make possible
quantitative studies of nerve cell numbers in
brain tissue. He is working with a
reversed microscope condensing an oscillating light
source + picking up the shadow picture on
a cathode ray tube. So far it works on blood
smears.
The museum features dissections of human
anatomy on a systemic basis with some
good but badly bleached preparations. A demonstration
in course of preparation shows a simple [word crossed out] compound
reflex system making using of a muscle fiber
1 1/2" in diameter - 30 ft [feet] of rubber electric cord
as the medullated nerve + an enlarged photograph.
