Oct [October] 4, Helsinki:-
Arrived in town last night after a long
trip from Evo (158 km [kilometres]) in snow. Raining
+ sleeting here. Had a press conference with
5 of the local scribes at 7, a late supper +
to bed.
This morning Koskimies met me at 8:30 +
we went over to the Zoological Institute to
go the rounds of the zoological staffs.
Met the following men:
Paavo Soumalainen [underlined], PhD. head of dept [department] of zoology
+ Professor of Zoology. Has done years of work on
hibernation in Erinaceus [underlined] + published several papers
on the subject. Recently he has found that
an injection of insulin followed by refrigeration
will induce hibernation in mid-summer.
He is now doing histology of A + B. islets of
Langerhans + of hypophysis in hibernating +
active hedgehogs.
T. Oksala geneticist, working, as most, with
Drosophila [underlined] but has been doing some experimental
work with the Samson fox. There is material
for a good lecture on genetics + wildlife biology in
my 503 course.
