- Oxford Dec [December] 9/52 [1952]. I spent most of today at the
Bureau of Animal Populations + at the Edward
Gray Inst. [Institute] but did not have any long sessions
except with John [Tener] + with Mrs Chitty. We discussed
[John P.] Kelsall's muskox report + John [Tener]'s new work
with the lemmings. Also his future hopes
to get back to B.C. [British Columbia] + if possible to U.B.C. [University of British Columbia]
I prowled around the libraries of the
two institutions + found them to be
remarkably satisfactory. the Alexander
Library at the [Edward] Gray Inst. [Institute] is particularly
good.
They have some interesting mechanical
contrivances here in the form of small
spring balances for special purposes. These
are very simple + made on the spot.

With [Henry Neville] Southern discussed his tawny owl
study just completed. He has worked on
the local area of about 1000 acres +
has found a fairly steady population of
20 prs [pairs] of owls. From his studies it
emerges:
1. That there is a great variation in the
hunting ability of owls. Nesting begins before
the annual recruitment to the small mammal
pop. [population] + while some birds manage to feed
their young on small mammals, other have
