- He is an accomplished taxidermist also +
has assembled a series of grouse in various
plumages + various hybrids that are almost
unequalled. Several caper [capercaillie] + blackgrouse
+ black game + willow ptarmigan hybrids.
Caught the train at 10 + had a good nights
sleep.
We came here by bus this morning
on a clear cold morning with heavy hoar
frost on everything. 10 [degree symbol] below 0 C [Celsius] last night.
This afternoon looked over the goldeneye set
up here.
By nest boxes 1 pr [pair] has now become 11. These
11 pr [pairs] are nesting in their choice of 100 boxes.
On one occassion [occasion] 2 hens nested in
boxes in the same tree.
10 cases of nest leaving have been
witnessed. They leave about 10 in the morning
the day after hatching. The hen precedes the
leaving by making a reconnaissance of the
entire area. She attacks any muskrats or other
intruders. Then enters the nest for several
minutes, comes out to the water + calls.
The young scramble out one after the
other in a matter of seconds + the hen
does not reenter the nest.
In no case has the hen raised her brood
on the lake she hatched on. They have
travelled 1-2 kilometers in the first 4 hours
