- In the afternoon we journeyed by bus
to Newport on the Tay where we had tea.
On the way we saw a very fine
flock of almost 2000 pink footed geese
coming into the stubble.
At dinner I met Peter Scott +
John Berry.
After dinner I went out to the [D.R.R.] Burts
home + spent a very pleasant evening
with them
I find that the department has a
faculty of 6 in Zoology. Current teaching
load about 9 students per faculty member.
and a total enrollment between here +
Dundee of about 2000
Beginners class in zoology about 45, then
40, then 25 for 2 yrs [years] then honours of
2-5. for a total of about 150.
The Gatey Marine Laboratory is a very
good small lab. Facilities consist of
a main aquarium room with salt + fresh
water tanks + some research cubicles, a controlled temperature room,
a lab room for about 4 or 5 graduate
students, and [word crossed out] small room for sectioning +
histological preparation, a balance room, a couple of
storage rooms, a directors office + a library. They have a small boat
kept in the nearby harbour. The
main trouble with the place is the paucity of
the [illegible word crossed out] shore + onshore fauna.
