- I was interested to find a very old abbey
on the island built by King David I
between 1154 + 1158 to commemmorate [commemorate]
the burial there of St [Saint] Adrian in 870.
Edinburgh Sept [September] 9/52 [1952].
Back on the job at the university
Heard Dr [Sir John?] Hammond of Cambridge discussing
recent developments in use of X Ray of
newborn piglets to detect those with extra
ribs or vertebrae in their attempt to
breed a longer pig. They apparently have
a very portable X ray outfit.
Sept [September] 11/52 [1952]
Had a discussion with Dr [I.W.?] Parnell of some
of his work here. Apparently the parasitology
group here is a most active one + has
been concentrating on the parasites of the hill
sheep. From his notebooks I got the
following data on fertility + sex ratios in
581 red deer hinds examined by him.
A Yeld hind is one not having a calf the previous year
A Jinnok is a short 2 year old - 18 mos [months]
