- In a general way the University of Helsinki has
an inclusive enrollment of 20,000 students. Fees
are 5-7 [illegible symbol] per semester plus a small course
fee of 2 [illegible symbol] or so per course. The first degree
granted is the M.A. [Masters of Arts] Beyond that, for the Ph.D
you must submit to examination in 2 major
+ a minor fields + some small amount of
course work may be necessary. The degree
is granted largely on the basis of research
+ the thesis must be presented in published
form, + 300 copies given to the university
In the anatomy class for pre meds each
student cleans + identifies the bones of a large
fish skull + then proceeds to pigeon + cat anatomy.
There are 15 hrs [hours] lecture + 5 of lectures
a week for 6 weeks.

This morning I was discussing with Lampio
the experiment in disease control in the European
hare on an island off Finland. The population
on this island became very low + an examination
revealed that there were Lung worm, stomach
worm, liver fluke + 2 other diseases he could not
remember. It was established also that 90% of
the defecation takes place during the nocturnal
feeding period. A number of feeding stations
were set up + poplar on birch + hay provided.
