  • that runs people out to the island. Mickeljohn [M. Meiklejohn] was waiting + in a light wind + heavy swell we made the 6 miles in about 40 minutes. The Isle of May is about 3/4 mile long. I should judge + not much over 400-600 yds [yards] wide. It rises to 160-180 feet at the mid point. A fog horn at each end + a lighthouse on the highest point make up the main features of the island. An older lighthouse with small adjacent living quarters comprise the Isle of May Bird Observatory and Field Station. The Observatory operates a Gully trap + three Heligoland traps as well as several smaller, portable traps for special purposes. Banding on the island has been going on since about 1900. The Heligoland traps are very simple in plan: [TRAP DIAGRAM] 20'+/-, 40'+/-, door, gate, 30'+/-, catching cage.
