Student organization + university system are
quite different from our own - Students are organized
into 13 "Nations" each having its own 'centre'
in a student building housing reading rooms
banquet rooms, recreation rooms etc [etcetera]. Students
enter the university by taking what is called
a Maturity exam at the end of their high school
training at 19. In high school they have read
either humanities or science. At the university
they "read" certain subjects + sit for exams whenever
they think they are prepared. These are written
+ oral. In general the first degree takes
4 years + a PhD another 4-5. Even the teachers
take the full course, which makes it a
very long training period + they are beginning

Came down from Uppsala this morning on
the early train 7:50 AM. + had trouble
getting a room. The Central Hotel agency
in the station found me one at the
Malmen. Very new + very comfortable 12.50 Kr [Krone]
I made an official call on Mr Southern
the Canadian Charge d'affairs here. A young
man very pleasant indeed. Tells me there
is a new legation in Helsinki.
