- saliva might be revealing. Some ruminants
secrete quite a lot of urea in the saliva
+ make use of this as a source of nitrogen
Thompson has been working on growth
in sheep + bone used height at whithers,
breadth behind the shoulders, chest-rump length
+ length of head, crown to snout. They find
that growth in height stops early whereas
growth in length is still continuing at 4 years
breadth behind shoulders is best indication
of condition - ie weight,
Difference in head length between deer [word crossed out] sheep on
a HH + an LL diet is about 5 mm [millimetres]
but is clearly discernible by eye + is a
good indication of general growth.
They have found also that tooth replacement
on the LL diet lags about 1 tooth behind
those on HH diet. Their dietary levels
are factually unknown. + the work
can be criticized on that basis. They
do not know the protein intake at either
level. Growth deficiencies on the L.L.
diet are not made up.
One of the things we must determine is
the age at which growth ceases on diff. [different]
planes of nutrition + in the diff [different] sexes To
what extent does the animal compensate for
dietary deficiencies by postponing maturity +
concentrating on growth.
Marginalia: deer.
