- Great metal doors slowly opened + in a
skirl of pipes + rattle of drums the pipers of the
Scots Guards entered the esplanade in quick
march. The gates closed behind the last man
+ the band paraded the length of the
esplanade, counter marched, reversed + took
up a position in the centre of the square.
As the last drum beat sounded there was
a moment of complete silence then from
both sides of the east stands came the sound
of pipes + the bands of the Black watch +
the Seaforths swung onto the parade ground
+ went through the counter marching routine
to draw up flanking the Black Watch.
The search light again picked out the castle
gate as it swung open to reveal the
front ranks of the pipers of the combined
Cameron Highlanders + Canadian Highlanders.
Theirs was a perfect slow march, with the
entire group passing faultlessly through
the ranks of those already on parade -
right to the far end of the esplanade
The counter march carried them again
through the other bands to divide, wheel
+ take up flanking positions. Then the
entire massed bands, 3 drum majors,
almost 100 pipers + about 50 drummers
put on a piping display that left me
about 6 ft [feet] in the air. The Canadian
