- The mature pine forest is worth about 1500-2000
dollars per acre. Sometimes one crop of barley or
rye is taken off the stump land before planting.
Notes on squirrels [underlined]
1540-1620 Squirrels were used as currency + taxes
were assessed in squirrel pelts. The years of
low squirrel populations were a matter of official
record + are available. Beginning in 1850 +
continuously for the last century are records of
squirrel numbers. Lampio has found the questioning
of residents the most reliable way of getting
pop. [population] data on early years. More recently the
pelt marking laws have provided excellent data.
In S. [South] Finland there have been 2 peaks per
decade occurring in the years ending 1-2 or 6.
In 100 years there have on 3 occassions [occasions] been
peaks between the others
In the north there have been 3 peaks per
decade. 9 in intermediate areas it has been
variable.
In the south the spruce is the key food species.
It has a good crop of cones the year after
there has been a dry hot spell sometime between
July + mid august of some 3 weeks. If there
is thus a good crop of seed foreseeable for
next year it is good management to harvest
even a high pop [population] of squirrels lightly as
survivors will be many + will have a high
