Aug [August] 29. Edinburgh. Yesterday + today passed uneventfully at
the university. Joyce [Cowan] has developed a very lame
back, almost like lumbago. It is a bit better
today but she has been released of all dish
washing + laundering by general family agreement.
The washing facilities + working surfaces here
are all pigmy-height + hard on the back.
Had a long chat after tea today with Dr Jones
+ another lecturer. They were inquiring about
the Canadian University system + situation. In general
the system here offers too little incentive to the
young keen man. Apparently top salaries for
senior lecturers here are only 1200 to 1500. A
Professor starts at 1800 + can hope for up to
2200 but there is only one in a department.
Often then the ambitious man must leave
academic life for an industrial or professorial
position in order to better himself financially.
The tradition here was that the Professor
was very much the "big man". He got all the
students fees + hired his own assistants.
He spent little time at the university +
in time most of his work was done by
