- Sept [September] 5. I have spent a busy week at the university + have
finished writing up the Microtus serpens [underlined] +
Sciurus carolinensis [underlined] studies. I have also summarized
all available information on the Faroe Isl. [Islands]
mammals, transcribed the measurements from
[Magnus Anton] Degerbols paper + begun summarizing data
on the insular species of northern Europe +
Asia. On Saturday Aug [August] 30 the family went
to the New York Ballet showing at the Empire
theatre. The programme consisted of
Caracole with music by W. A. Motzart [Mozart] + very
beautiful dance routines in attractive traditional ballet
costumes. This was followed by an historic
pantomime of considerable dramatic content
Tyl Ulenspeigel [Ulenspiegel] music by Richard Strauss.
Very good. The 3rd [third] offering Stravinsky's
Firebird was the best of the lot + the
premier ballerina Maria Tallchief received a
tremendous ovation. The final act was
the Pied Piper - a take of an American
Jazz - clever, well danced but to me
not appealing.
Last night we enjoyed a first class
performance at Usher Hall with Sir John Barbirolli
conducting the Halli Orchestra. Programme was
Don Pasquale Overture, Hayden Symphony No. [Number] 6 in
D. Four songs by Brahms op [opus] 121 + finally
a superb rendering of Sibelius Symphony # 5 in E
flat major Op [Opus] 82. We got home about 10:15 the
children tired but very lively.
