- all other species have preferred months but calve throughout the year
what are the advantages of one pattern over the other. In general peaks
of births conform to rain. There is some suggestive evidence
that gestations may be prolonged when rains are delayed.
3 or 4 hippo [hippopotamus] fed on the lake edge but we could not get close
The lake is alkaline but some of the backwaters are well fed by permanent
streams + are probably fairly fresh. We saw 2 Massai [Maasai] manyates [manyatta]
+ a small number of cattle, but unless our view was very incomplete
I doubt that cattle are having a serious impact on the crater just
now. How many cattle + people are here?
We spent from 11 AM to 5 PM at the garage getting a spring
repaired + trying to get the generator system repaired. The latter without
success. so we have to conserve our electricity + park facing
down hill until we get to a bigger garage. The lodge was good
well run + popular. Numbers of people came in for lunch
but only a few were staying. The big season is not on yet.
I did some birding along the road + added several interesting
species: Saw a pair of what I took to be red duikers - very red all over.
At 5 we came along the river + down into the crater again
On the way down had a good look at 2 dik-dik. Near the
lake we photographed 2 hippo [hippopotamus] then settled down to watch
the hyenas. About 40 of them converged on a herd of about
60 wildebeest that still included 3 or 4 of this year's young. However
though there were a few short runs the hyenas were generally
sloping along in their perfect pacing [underlined] gait. I had not noticed before
that they paced instead of using the alternating walk.
