- July 5. Conservation research priorities as seen by Hugh Lamprey, Director
Serengeti Research Centre.
Research Centre will provide. Residence, lab space + basic res. [research] equipment
Facilities for holding animals alive for research.
Visitors should have the following financial support.
Income married L [pounds] 1000+ single L [pounds] 800+
Vehicle L [pounds] 1000.
Operating costs L [pounds] 600
Misc. [miscellaneous] Equip [equipment] L [pounds] 500. + additional for special equipment
House might be needed beyond presently available L [pounds] 300 [+/-].
Travel as needed - return fare Canada about L [pounds] 400.
Research Studies regarded as having high priority.
a) Any studies on captive animals regarding controlled food
consumption, ideal growth rates, on site growth rates, rates of
food passage, digestive efficiency, any telemetred physiological
parameters.
a [b]) Follow up on the wildebeest study just completed. Now have
pop. [population] dynamics, utilization of grassland, (Thesis of Watson at Cambridge)
Need study at greater depth on food consumption related to weather cycle,
water use, etc. Physical studies involving water use, nutrition,
food preferences, absolute food utilization.
c) Study of Thompsons Gazelle [male symbol] uses little water, [female symbol] apparently
needs more. This should include basic ecological aspects.
d) Ecology of the Grants Gazelle. it apparently never drinks + the
water economy would be interesting to work out. [illegible word] Bristol tells
me that Dr [Doctor] C.R. Taylor, EAFRO, has been studying heat stress +
