- a lot of cub death by abandonment. He has personally seen a lioness
go off without one cub - + later on lose her 2 others. If food
is hard to get the cubs don't get anything to eat as the adults
eat first. If Tommp [Thompson gazelle] are the prey for instance the mother
will eat the entire animal + then is satisfies + does not hunt for
her cubs. Thus cub survival is best where there is an
abundance of heavy prey. ie good lion conditions. Many of
his females have not come in heat during the year he has
watched them. Thus pride productivity is very low.
Photographed hyraxes around the kopje at Seronera.
Bristol caught a small young of the Procama[?] - the very tame
species. Then we started south across the 2000 sq [square] miles of
grassland (park area 5500 sq [square] miles) Game was not abundant
Saw several giraffe, 2 topi, 3 or 4 congoni [kongoni] before we got
to the lake where there were thousands - perhaps 50-80
the wildebeest + zebra + 3 buffalo - a good smattering
of Tho [Thompson] gazelle.
We drove down to the last kopje S [south] of the lake
+ there photographed a magnificent Martial eagle at nest -
unfortunately light was failing + it may be underexposed.
Then back to the lake + its superb flock of 10 th [thousand] [+/-]
lesser flamingo. On the lake shore were a curlew sandpiper,
4, sand plovers, 1, 3-banded plover, 2, stilt, hottentot teal + 4 blacksmith
plover. We drove perhaps 2 miles out onto the grassland onto
the crest of a hill [and] stopped for the night with the herds
all round us and 9 hyenas poking their heads out of
