adjacent burrows, 2 pr [pair] of jackalls [jackals] played about, another pair
+ 3 species of vultures tore at the remains of a 3-4 mos [month] gnu.
We put a leopard out of a tree + heard it around in the
long grass for a bit. Saw 2 young lioness close too but
light was as poor as the setting.
After dinner while I was writing this a great roaring
rushing noise came at us + the entire herd of zebra and
wildebeest stampeded by. The groans of the gnu + zebra [word crossed out] high
pitched barks of the zebra were fascinating. The whole
[illegible word crossed out] country is still vibrating with their noise - Several
springboks around the car.
Re [regarding] wildebeest [Dr. Hugh} Lamprey says about 90% of the cows are
pregnant + birth in Jan [January] - Feb [February] but by August
calves are only about 15% of the herd. Lions take 10% of
the (adults?) herd + this comprises almost all of the adult mortality
average age at death 7 yrs [years], max 14 [+/-] yrs [years]. Males are
territorial + in 2 of my air photos the harem clusters
can be seen.
These entire grasslands are burned each year. This is leading
to an almost complete absence of regeneration in the umbrella
acacia + other such species. The burning keeps the
grassland free of shrubs, it attracts game, wipes out
ticks + gets rid of many tsetse. the old standing grass is
lacking in nutrition. A
