- June 28/67 [1967] Lake Amboseli Game Reserve = Maasai Reserve
Left Manyara at 6:30 this morning + drive to Arusha. En
route found a dead springbok on the road, also a black
backed jackal. In Arusha met Hans Kruuk + his wife +
departed to the New Arusha Hotel for tea. Later lunched there
Seemed like a clean + well managed place - lots of tourists
+ all eating everything. A big new wing going on so at the
moment there is much hammering.
After dinn [word crossed out] lunch we enquired of the manager of the Meerschaum
Company as to how to reach his mine at Amboseli without
using the main highway. We were given directions that 3 1/2 hrs [hours]
later found us back in Kenya after 5 days in Tanzania
without going through immigration + customs in either
direction.
On the way we passed through some fine coffee plantation
then into pasture land in some places heavily mounded by
grass covered nests of the giant termite. Then we left
habitation + passed for 20 miles by a narrow, rough
track through very arid thorn forest up to 8' [feet], opening here
+ there into arid short-grass plains. Where there were Sansevieria
thickets we saw several dik-dik, I saw one grey duiker +
a beautiful bull oryx - running at 400 yds [yards]. Several zebra,
gnu, Grants + Thompson gazelle. There were several large camps
of Maasai with big herds of cattle + goats. At one of these the
young men were performing one of their jumping dances.
The young men of 15 [+/-] to 23 [+/-] belong to a Moran [warrior tribe]. Every
3 or 4 years the accumulated group is initiated + becomes
