Ci Xi, the last Empress of China, is known to Westerners as the Empress Dowager. Her extraordinary reign ranks in history with Queen Victoria of England and Catherine the Great of Russia. She was born into a troubled time, when Chinas last imperial empire was waning. However, this powerful and beautiful woman was able to hold the nation and dynasty together from the 1860s until her death in 1908 at the age of 74. To relieve herself of the tensions of State, she took up the brush and became a fairly skilful amateur painter. The painting illustrated here is not of exceptional quality but it is historically important. The calligraphy on it is by Jun Xiang (1841-1915).
