- Cervus.
the Sun River in Montana by way of Belly
River, the residual herd of 150-200 head
on Castle River + Beaver Mine river
+ from the Flathead in B.C. [British Columbia]
In 1928 or thereabout they came
over from the Kootenay into the
Livingstone river area + since
then have become generally distributed
all the way through to the s [south] boundary
of Banff Park.
In 1907 Sir Cecil Denny wrote
the Riders of the Plains - a story of early
days of the Mounted Police in this area.
He mentions elk as extremely abundant
along all the riverbottoms, far out
the plains in 1874-1878 but in 79
an epidemic swept through the
elk all over western N. [North] America
+ practically exterminated them.
In 1907 Regall was surveying
this area + found many horns
+ skulls but no one had heard
of any elk for years back.
Elk damage on farms here has
been going on for years. In 1936 it
was particularly heavy. He has tried
to fence elk out, an 8 ft [foot] fence was
jumped by the larger animals, a 13
ft [foot] fence heavily poled + with
wires 8" +/- apart held them for about
5 years but was finally broken down
turn to A-B.
