- Cervus canadensis [underlined]
Behaviour:- The large group were some
bedded, some feeding on the river
flats 3 mi [miles] W [west] of here. 4 calves were
lying close together + seemed to be
running with the herd rather
than with any particular cow. Others
seen closely followed their mothers.
One cow was seen to repeatedly
chase a yearling that came back
over + over again. She (the old cow) had a
calf with her.
Range [underlined]:- Warden J.J. Meredith reports
that there are a few elk enter the
park over wolverine Creek from the
Banff side in the summer.
Moult:- Does [word crossed out] Cows + bulls in summer pelage
but yearlings many of them still
in transition.
Vermilion Cr. [Creek] June 25/43 [1943]
Up Tokum Cr. [Creek] saw tracks of 2 or 3
in early spring (about 4 miles) - no fresh sign
Mr Crooks tells me that elk
winter up as far as Kootenay
Crossing + toward the Vermilion.
About 3 ft [feet] of Snow.
Radium Hot Springs June 26/43 [1943]
Cameron (Game Warden - Golden) reports elk
wintering along the Kootenay north of the
park as far up as Bush Lake.
