- Ovis canadensis [underlined]
Aug. [August] 4/43 [1943].
Disease etc [etcetera]:- We found one very old ram
lying near the summit of a ridge. Right
horn good, left horn broken off about
10 to 12 inches from the skull. An old
break. He was very emaciated + as we
watched his head sank forward, one
horn touched the ground + he was in a
deep sleep. We walked up quietly +
Jim [James Simpson] jumped on his back while I stood
10 ft [feet] away. The fleece Jim [James Simpson] was holding
too came away + the ram staggered to
his feet + cantered laboriously 100 yds [yards]
+ then stood looking back. If we had
so wished we could have cut his
throat with our hunting knives.
Found another ad. [adult] ram dead this
spring. Did not have time to examine it
today.
