  • Cervus canadensis. of a ridge with a sheer drop of 1000 ft [feet] to the north these 2 bulls appeared near the crest of the drop toiling up the steep shale slide. Both were panting but the larger of the two was nearing exhaustion. He stopped every 10 ft [feet] or so + with mouth wide open + tongue hanging out struggled for breath. They finally scaled a short sheer chimney + achieved the crest. Rested for a few minutes + went off slowly into the valley. Either grizzly or wolf must have been responsible but I have seen no wolf sign in here. Cairn Cabin. Aug. [August] 4/43 [1943]. Counted 9 bull elk on range west of cabin + south of cabin creek. Rocky Cabin Aug. [August] 6/43 [1943]. Elk wintering up the cairn right to the pass. A pair of shed antlers + a male winter bull with antlers on. Census:- in Pass 9 [male symbol] At cabin. 3 [female symbol] 3 calves 4 yearlings [Edward] MacDonald reports cows + bulls wintering here but none above the upper cabin. We saw no shed antlers. Lick:- Large muck lick about 1/2 mile S [south] of cabin. Watched both adult + spotted
