- Cervus canadensis.
of a ridge with a sheer drop of 1000
ft [feet] to the north these 2 bulls appeared
near the crest of the drop toiling up
the steep shale slide. Both were panting
but the larger of the two was
nearing exhaustion. He stopped every
10 ft [feet] or so + with mouth wide open
+ tongue hanging out struggled
for breath. They finally scaled
a short sheer chimney + achieved
the crest. Rested for a few minutes
+ went off slowly into the valley.
Either grizzly or wolf must
have been responsible but I have
seen no wolf sign in here.
Cairn Cabin. Aug. [August] 4/43 [1943].
Counted 9 bull elk on range
west of cabin + south of cabin creek.
Rocky Cabin Aug. [August] 6/43 [1943].
Elk wintering up the cairn
right to the pass. A pair of shed
antlers + a male winter bull
with antlers on.
Census:- in Pass 9 [male symbol]
At cabin. 3 [female symbol] 3 calves 4 yearlings
[Edward] MacDonald reports cows + bulls
wintering here but none above the
upper cabin. We saw no shed
antlers.
Lick:- Large muck lick about 1/2 mile S [south] of
cabin. Watched both adult + spotted
