  • Cervus he estimates between 600 and a thousand elk came out of Glacier park last winter, probably nearer the larger figure. For the most part they stayed in the Belly Valley + went up to 5 miles out of the park. He states that only 2 ranchers are actually suffering damage + they don't appear to want to do much to help themselves. On dry years the range was pretty well grazed off by cattle but this year the grazing is lush + growth very heavy. He has seen very little sign of elk. Browsing. Just a little on willow Certainly the aspen of the Belly river valley + the Eleagnus etc [etcetera] are untouched - not barking whatever This last winter there was only about 9 in [inches] of snow on the ground until February but from then through to April 160 inches fell + it lay 4 ft [feet] deep in many areas. Elk moved down + though he found only 1 dead one the cows became poor. As Christensen points out the time when the elk are down on the ranches the roads are blocked with snow + impossible thus
