Yaha Tinda Ranch. July 7/43 [1943].
About 50-60 bulls wintered here
last winter - no cows. Elk
first come in here in 1933-34
as reported by Clifford Murphy, Warden
Five or six died or were
killed here on the ranch last winter
nearest bunch of cows winters
on James River east of here.
Divide Creek Cabin. July 8/43 [1943]
Saw 3 large bull elk lying in
the dwarf willows at timberline -
clean sleek animals apparently
in the pink of condition: At precisely
7 PM they rose + began eating
willows for 15 or 20 minutes
then went down to the creek +
started to graze.
Shed antlers on river flats
at mouth of Divide Creek.
Indian head Cabin, Clearwater Cr. [Creek] July 10/43 [1943]
Warden C. Philips has seen 4 elk
around here last summer.
possibly 5. Has not seen any
above here on the clearwater.
They are now wintering 5 to 6
miles below here.
Clearwater Lakes cabin. July 13/43 [1943]
Elk tracks as far as this but no
shed antlers. Apparently do not winter yet
