Vermilion Crossing.
Sawback L. [Lake] July 2/43 [1943].
Saw bull elk high up on grassy slope
E [east] of 40 mile Pass + again on ridge
N [north] of our camp. Heavy winter or very
early spring charming on SW [southwest] face of
Mt. [Mount] Brewster - suspect heavy competition
with sheep winter bands here.

Abundant sign of elk wintering
all along the upper Cascades, up the
Cuthead + down Wigmore Cr. [Creek] Shed antlers
of big bulls seen from Cuthead summit
to here. Wallows in 20 +/- places on
upper Cuthead + Wigmore creeks. Many
fresh tracks on all trails but only
1 [male symbol] + 1 [female symbol] seen - both together.
Kills 1 juv [juvenile] near cuthead summit.
