- Foreword
It is with great pleasure that the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria presents Soul of the Tiger: Chinese Amber Carvings from the Reif Collection. We are much indebted to Mrs. Kay Reif for the donation of this magnificent and significant collection of Chinese amber carvings to the permanent collection of the Gallery. It is all the more outstanding as we consider that this extraordinary gift is heralded as one of the very finest of such collections in all the world. As well, her loan of other amber pieces from her private collection further adds to the exhibitions strength and depth. With this donation, Kay Reif and her late husband, Francis Reif, create a lasting legacy to all Canadians and the Gallery anticipates sharing these treasures across the nation through travelling exhibitions in the near future.
We are, too, grateful to both CanWest Mall and Fairway Markets for making this project possible through their generous corporate sponsorship. Their critical financial support facilitates the publics access to this exquisite material which is both rare and highly cherished in Chinese art. This is a major sponsorship from these Victoria businesses and we are truly grateful to them.
I would like to add my thanks to Curator Barry Till for organizing the exhibition and writing the catalogue, his wife, Paula Swart, who assisted him, and to all the Gallerys professional staff who helped him with this project.
