  • [Centre, top:] EXTRACTS FROM DIFFERENT LETTERS RECIEVED [Upper left:] COPY. [Upper right:] New Eltham, 16/3/17. [Centre:] MRS. MINTY TO SYLVIE. Dear Miss Destrube. We were so grieved to hear the sad news of your brothers. Accept our deepest sympathy for youall in this great trial. It is too terrible! My son often spoke of your brothers and used to say how devot<del>h</del>ed they were to one another, also how brave, and if he was anywhere near them, he used to feel comparatively safe. Ever since we recieved Will's letter our thoughts have been with you all, and we hoped it as not so bad as he thought. We were glad to hear your dear father is so brave, and hope strength will be given youall to bear up against such a terrible blow. My son is at present safe, he is at <del>pr</del> a school of Infantry for four or five <del>months</del> weeks. He will miss Guy and Paul terribly Do hope he and Georges will soon meet in France, and that they will both' be spared to come home to us. With kindest regards from us all, Yours very sincerley (signed) S. MINTY [Centre, middle:] FROM PTE. S. VINECOMBE? NO, 542 To GEORGES [Right, middle:] France, Wednesday 7th, 1917 Dear Georges, I have just had your address from Pte Cox. I also saw your letter and can quite understand how you feel after such sad news. Well Georges, to start with, we have lost the junk of our section, including the two Sergeants. You would not know the Section or Battalion now. I am the only one who came out with the Sect. from England left. Dear Georges, with regard to your poor brothers, Guy and Paul they were both found together and were buried together, this is according to one of the burying party. The burying party was send up over a week ago and they have been up the line all the time. They send a report back that it was a shock to the few old boys who are left, when they heard of Guy and Paul. I think without doubt, this sad news upset us more than any other case we heard of. I have known Paul since the White City days, and I knew you and Guy at Roffey, - three of the very best! When they, (the burying party) come back I will inquire as to where Guy and Paul were buried, also if they have any personal kit to hand over to me, and I will look after it with care. I will do my best to get any further details, so I conclude, I cannot find words to express my feelings for you anf those at home. I remain, Yours very sincerely, (signed) VINNIE.
