Topaz Shelter May 29/44.
Today was fine + warm with a light
west wind. The rivers are very high.
With light packs the 4 of us left Blue
Creek at 9:20 + hiked the nine miles to
here by 1 o'clock. We had to come up
the East bank of the river where the
going was only fair + became very
poor when we hit the main trail
at the ford. In the timber from
there to the upper end of the canyon
the snow lay about a foot deep.
We followed in the footsteps of a
grizzly + were thus aided to some degree.
Above the valley [word crossed out] canyon there is
no snow on the valley floor or
on the west facing slides as far up
as the natural arch.
Caribou are feeding in the valley
bottom + sheep, deer + goat on the
open slides
Count Deer 5
Goat 7
Caribou 5
Sheep. 22
Range:- There is some winter moose sign +
a few fresh tracks but we have
seen no moose. The willows are
practically untouched here thus suggesting
that the caribou have not been using
