- Ptarmigan.
Cairn Cabin. July 15/44 [1944]
Found a hen white tail with 4 chicks
on the rocky slopes above the big mesa
2 miles down valley from the cabin,
The chicks were flying well but were
tossed about by the high wind.
Stomach contents of chicks
(1) 8 beetles, 4 flies, 3 Dryas integrifolia
heads + 6 leaves, several unid. [unidentified] seeds.
(2) 7 beetles, Dryas [integrifolia] leaves, seeds
+ 1 Lepidopterous larva.

Warden Jamieson reports that
ptarmigan used to be quite common
along the boundary country of the
park but in the last few years
have become noticeably less numerous
