- Canis lupus. [underlined]
Athabasca Falls. July 6/45. [1945]
Today examined a wolf den found
by Frank Wells a month ago.
It was about 1/2 mile S. [south] of the
Beaver Lodge den + situated under
a huge rock, part of an outcrop.
Near by was another burrow
used at one time as a den +
in use in early June as a
retreat. 50 ft [feet] away under
another large rock was a shallow
cavern, also large enough to
accommodate 2 or 3 adult wolves
in comfort + dryness.
The den entered down a short
slope, the tunnel 18" [inches] x 16" [inches]+/-
ran in about 7 ft [feet]. No bed of
any sort was at the end of it
The cubs were in it when
first found.
Some 30 yards away is a
large rock slide of huge boulders
+ everywhere about it was
evidence that the pups had spent
many days in + around these
rocks + crevices
In Well's second visit here
3 weeks ago the pups, at least
4 of them were seen among
the lower rocks. Scats were
abundant along the lower edge
